The attire was festive and the smiles were broad on April 20 as IWC awarded Crown Point's Lake Street School's K-5 grade poetry winners with "Power of Poetry" medallions, a magazine of winning poems, and monetory gifts.
The PoPP project, which was funded by the Crown Point Community Foundation and
other private donors, is the first in a series of projects sponsored by Indiana Writers' Consortium's Writing to Succeed initiative.
Writing to Succeed recognizes the importance of literacy and creativity in a child's academic success.
Lake Street Principal Deb Ciochina
enthusiastically partnered the project, and worked with IWC during the eight month time frame during which IWC volunteers
crafted materials and handouts as teacher resources as well as visited each classroom to discuss poetry.
After teacher instruction and parent guidance, over 91% of the students participated in the contest. Awards were distributed recently, during the school's first annual Lyceum (an arts celebration) and ended with snacks and poetry.
Founded in 2007, the Indiana Writers' Consortium's mission is to inspire, network, unite and support Indiana's Creative Writers.
